We've come to the 5th book in the Chronicles of Nick series - the YA spin-off of Kenyon's Dark Hunter novels. At this point Nick is used to random demon attacks - there are a lot of people who want him dead. Usually he can count on his growing circle of friends and his developing powers to help him but he has been sent to an alternate dimension into an alternate Nick and neither his free acts or his powers exist there. Kenyon uses Nick's new struggles to survive and get home to continue her themes of how important love, family (the one you are born to and the one you choose), and choice are in crafting the person you become.
