The author, Regina Calcaterra, was raised on Long Island with four siblings by the system and an abusive, cruel mother. The story is a a story of survival by five children under "beyond belief" circumstances by supporting and loving each other. It shows the strength of the human spirit. After I finished this book I can't stop thinking about it. Have plenty of tissues handy! It is a difficult journey.

What I liked about this book is that it kept you guessing to the very end. The chief of psychiatry at the hospital takes on a teenage boy who is troubled as a new patient. The psychiatrist's life unravels after a teenage girl is found murdered and his patient is the prime suspect. He has faith in his patient Max and does not believe he committed the crime but that there is a sociopath on the loose. He starts doing investigating on his own. The surprise ending is great.

Elizabeth and Darcy must cancel the festivities as Elizabeth's sister Lydia's husband Wickham becomes the prime suspect of the murder. Although a bit slow moving at times, overall I found the book to be interesting with quite the surprise ending.

This is how Mattia and Alice's relationship is, close but they never come together. They bond over their traumatic experiences and difficult lives. The author is good at keeping your interest and you want to continue to find the resolution - however much of the resolution is left to the reader's imagination. It does get you thinking and examining life. A good read but a bit depressing.

I received such an interesting trip through history and so much more from this book. I never really gave much thought to the Japanese population living in America during World War II, especially on the west coast like Hawaii, California and Washington. The agony these people went through was no different than all the Americans during that time. The story is told by the son of Chinese immigrants and the problem when he falls in love with a Japanese girl. Who knew these cultures were at odds with each other?!?!
Phenomenal job exploring the history and attitudes at this time.

This movie was full of adventure that kept you glued to the TV. It was based on an Aryan nation person getting free from prison to kill a person of color on his first day released. He has to hide out at a person of color's house, the type of people he can't stand. They go through struggles and fight during their stay there. Almost killing a three-year-old by covering his mouth as he screamed when hearing a cop outside looking for these characters hiding.

Interesting historical romance contrasting with today's challenges to romance.

He is with his soon-to-be adopted daughter, 14 year old Letty who tries to thwart a revenge crime on Lucas. A bit confusing at times as the two scenarios unfold, but all is tied up and solved in the end.

A rather dark novel beginning in Mastic Beach, Long Island and stretching out to Oregon and south to Kentucky. Freedom Oliver is a woman who tends bar at a biker bar in Oregon, seems to get drunk every night spilling her secrets to a police officer who sees her home only to deny those secrets when she sobers up. It then lets you in on the secret that she has been in the Witness Protection Program for twenty years, she was married into a horrible criminal family who now are seeking vengeance for her testifying against her brother-in-law, has two children she hasn't seen for that time who were adopted and when she finds that the daughter she never knew is missing off she goes looking to try to find and protect her.

One of the best chronicles of alcoholism ever written. (Rounding out my top three in the area of addiction are Senator George McGovern's Torry, about his daughter's descent into and eventual death from alcoholism; and Augusten Burrough's Dry, a commentary on his own addiction.
Drinking: A Love Story presents Ms. Knapp's story as a so-called "high functioning" alcoholic; a well-educated, middle class, professionally successful reporter for many respected periodicals. It covers her 20-year descent into full-fledged, harrowing alcoholism, beginning with light social drinking and progressing inexorably into a life that has become an alcohol-fueled nightmare. Details hitting her "bottom" and the extremely difficult but hopeful process of recovery.
This book should be compulsory reading for anyone -- and there are many out there -- who view alcoholics as weak-willed, selfish, low-class individuals.

This book tries to put into perspective the reason for which a dog lives. The story is told in the first person from the dog's voice. The dog's main goal is to search for the meaning of his life and he has several lives to discover this purpose. I really believe that you have to be a dog lover or even an animal lover to really appreciate this book. There were some moments that did give me pause to wonder if my dog really might see things the way the main character in this book does. It was an easy read but not up to my particular interest level.

The sequel to the book The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, which I read over a year ago and was touching and outstanding, was well worth the wait. The setting is in a hospice and Miss Queenie gets a postcard from Harold Fry saying "wait for me" and he walks his way over 600 miles. Queenie reminisces about the love she had for Harold, but never told him, he is married. The description of the "dayroom" each day at the hospice and the wonderful picturesque descriptions of Queenie's "sea garden", job scenarios and all details, have to pictures jumping out at you. Beautifully written, heart-wrenching, what an excellent story how if we fail to communicate it can snowball out of control and then no turning back.

This led her to become inadvertently involved with a top managed crime boss, murders and trying to thwart a co-worker of her husband from attempting to seduce him.
It was a fun read, mild who done it and kept you intrigued.

Intrigued by the hype surrounding the "sequel" to this iconic novel, I re-read the original (after 40 years!) It holds up beautifully after decades of being a classic and best-seller. In many respects it was way ahead of its time, highlighting topics like women's achievements (in the character of Scout), and race relations and discrimination. Of course, the central character is the iconic, uber-principled lawyer Atticus Finch who teaches Scout, Jeb -- and all of us -- life lessons.
This is a must-read. I will not read the alleged "sequel", as I understand it devolves into denigrating Finch's integrity and long-term adherence to his high standards and values.
Please leave me my heroes!

He marries his high school sweetheart and they quickly start a family. Although John seems to have a great life, he is surrounded by tragedy -- his brother, his father, and then his wife and their second unborn child die. He is overcome with grief and erects two crosses at the crash site where his wife and child died. He visits it everyday and one day encounters a man tending to the crosses -- clearing away weeds and painting them. As John begins his dialogue with the "Cross Gardener" you immediately want to know who he is. I thought I had it figured out a few times and then was completely surprised in the end. This is a very spiritual tale that offers consolation to anyone who suffered a loss. Although it is fiction, it does pose questions and some answers -- maybe -- for what happens after someone we love passes away.

Mazie Phillips (based on the real life Mazie Phillips-Gordon, "the Queen of the Bowery") does work in the box office of a turn-of-the-century cinema but she hates films. They make her literally ill. She lives with her sisters and brother-in-law and the book charts her life from World War One through to her legendary good deeds during the Great Depression, but it takes too long to get there. She is an intriguing and authentic heroine but the book meanders a little too much.

This one in particular had a lot of detail. You can tell that she must have researched the subject matter thoroughly. Even when talking about the jail it is in very vivid detail. The book was about a teenage couple who supposedly have a suicide pact. The girl gets shot. Then the boy is charged with her murder. In general I love her books. This one in particular had a lot of detail. You can tell that she must have researched the subject matter thoroughly. Even when talking about the jail it is in very vivid detail. I also like her books because there is always a twist at the end and this one is no exception.

Starring Melissa McCarthy, Bill Murray and Jaeden Lieberher. I did not see this movie when it was in the theaters because I do not care for Melissa McCarthy. However, after many people I know raved about it, I decided to get the DVD. I ended up really enjoying it. It is a totally different role than Melissa McCarthy usually plays. She is a single mother, with a young son who moves to a new town. She ends up asking the "loser" neighbor (played by Bill Murray) to babysit while she is working. The actor playing her son is just great. What ensues is a comical but also very heartwarming relationship between her son and neighbor. Was definitely a "feel good" movie.

An 18-year-old boy enters into a professional music class to find out his teacher makes him discouraged about being in the band. Then the band teacher throws things at him, yells at him, and even replaces him. And after all of that, Josh (school boy) broke up with his girlfriend just to have time to practice. But he realizes one kid had committed suicide because of Fletcher (band teacher). Josh was told to stand up and say something to the interviewers. Once he did Fletcher automatically seeks revenge.

Will has decided that after two years of living in a wheelchair he wants to end his life with an assisted suicide in six months. Will's mother hopes that Louisa can change his mind.
Jojo Moyes made an attempt to give multiple opinions of assisted suicide with her characters. I did not find myself invested in the characters and found the plot very predictable. I would even think people with disabilities might find the book offensive.

While I am not a fan of war movies, I am a fan of films directed by Clint Eastwood. This one didn't disappoint. Great character development, interesting story and excellent acting by Bradley Cooper. I thought he had a good chance at an Oscar for this film. Worth the time.

This book will make you laugh and at the same time examine your own life practices!

The main character is a woman who is the daughter of Jewish Holocaust survivors. We follow her journey to bring education to these Russian women who are still under the watchful eyes of the government. It is scary to see the oppression and corruption that still is life-threatening. It is a very good read that will really make you appreciate the freedoms we may sometimes take for granted here in America.

The women in this book are really strong individuals from Frau Elena, Jutta, and especially Marie-Laure. This is the third book in a series with character Charlotte Stone. The books are a mix of the Ghost Whisperer and Criminal Minds TV series. Enjoyable but I felt that the first two books were better. The storyline is predictable. I would give the book a chance because it is suspenseful and I enjoy the characters. Must read the first two books first though! They are:
