Author: P.D. James

In this novel, the author draws the characters of Jane Austen's book Pride and Prejudice into a tale of murder and emotional mayhem. It is set in England in 1803. The night before a yearly ball is set to take place at Pemberley estate, someone is found dead in the forest. Elizabeth and Darcy must cancel the festivities as Elizabeth's sister Lydia's husband Wickham becomes the prime suspect of the murder. Title: La Solitudino di Numeri Primi/The Solitude of Prime Numbers

This story follows two characters - Alice and Mattia - over the course of about twenty years. They are close friends and have a dynamic that the author compares to "prime number twins" - two prime numbers, separated by one number - close but never touching. This is how Mattia and Alice's relationship is, close but they never come together. They bond over their traumatic experiences and difficult lives. The author is good at keeping your interest and you want to continue to find the resolution - however much of the resolution is left to the reader's imagination. It does get you thinking and examining life. A good read but a bit depressing.

One of the best chronicles of alcoholism ever written. (Rounding out my top three in the area of addiction are Senator George McGovern's Torry, about his daughter's descent into and eventual death from alcoholism; and Augusten Burrough's Dry, a commentary on his own addiction.
Drinking: A Love Story presents Ms. Knapp's story as a so-called "high functioning" alcoholic; a well-educated, middle class, professionally successful reporter for many respected periodicals. It covers her 20-year descent into full-fledged, harrowing alcoholism, beginning with light social drinking and progressing inexorably into a life that has become an alcohol-fueled nightmare. Details hitting her "bottom" and the extremely difficult but hopeful process of recovery.

Roberts' penchant for intensive research shows here, in her mastery of the discipline of archaeology, as she has in past novels researched and credibly written about numerous topics ranging from horticulture to the information technology world.

The Liar

Title: The Liar
Author: Nora Roberts

Good to see Roberts evolve from her (at times) predictable and somewhat sappy romances into the romance/mystery genre. The Liar, while retaining her trademark fun and snappy dialogue, also tackles the plight of abused women head-on, including their denial, sense of worthlessness and guilt, and inability to break out of the abuse cycle. Would definitely recommend.

Wonderfully researched mystery-romance novel that continues Roberts' evolution from "simple" romance themes to more complex suspense stories. The plot has many elements of Alfred Hitchcock's movie Rear Window. A house-sitter in a high-rise apartment building is passing the time looking at nearby apartments through binoculars, and witnesses what looks like a murder (of a fashion model). To Kill a Mockingbird

Title: To Kill a Mockingbird
Author: Harper Lee

Intrigued by the hype surrounding the "sequel" to this iconic novel, I re-read the original (after 40 years!) It holds up beautifully after decades of being a classic and best-seller. In many respects it was way ahead of its time, highlighting topics like women's achievements (in the character of Scout), and race relations and discrimination. Of course, the central character is the iconic, uber-principled lawyer Atticus Finch who teaches Scout, Jeb -- and all of us -- life lessons.
This is a must-read. I will not read the alleged "sequel", as I understand it devolves into denigrating Finch's integrity and long-term adherence to his high standards and values.

The Cross Gardener

Title: The Cross Gardener
Author: Jason F. Wright

John Bevan is an orphaned child born on the side of a road after a car accident that takes his mother's life. He is adopted by an orchardist and has a happy life. He marries his high school sweetheart and they quickly start a family. Although John seems to have a great life, he is surrounded by tragedy -- his brother, his father, and then his wife and their second unborn child die. He is overcome with grief and erects two crosses at the crash site where his wife and child died. He visits it everyday and one day encounters a man tending to the crosses -- clearing away weeds and painting them. As John begins his dialogue with the "Cross Gardener" you immediately want to know who he is. I thought I had it figured out a few times and then was completely surprised in the end. This is a very spiritual tale that offers consolation to anyone who suffered a loss. Although it is fiction, it does pose questions and some answers -- maybe -- for what happens after someone we love passes away.

Mazie Phillips (based on the real life Mazie Phillips-Gordon, "the Queen of the Bowery") does work in the box office of a turn-of-the-century cinema but she hates films. They make her literally ill. She lives with her sisters and brother-in-law and the book charts her life from World War One through to her legendary good deeds during the Great Depression, but it takes too long to get there. All of these life experiments are very introspective and funny at the same time. Each experiment is a learning experience. He keeps some aspects and abandons others. This book will make you laugh and at the same time examine your own life practices!

Maeve's Times: in her own Words

Title: Maeve's Times: in her own Words
Author: Maeve Binchy

I have loved all of Maeve Binchy's books. Sadly, she passed away. This book is a compilation of her short stories written when she was an author for the Irish Times. In typical Maeve Binchy style, you will enjoy her heartwarming storytelling once again.

Hotel Moscow

Title: Hotel Moscow
Author: Talia Carner

This book follows a group of American women that travel to Russia to teach business skills to Russian women. It takes place in 1993, shortly after the fall of Communism and the Soviet Union. The main character is a woman who is the daughter of Jewish Holocaust survivors. We follow her journey to bring education to these Russian women who are still under the watchful eyes of the government. It is scary to see the oppression and corruption that still is life-threatening. It is a very good read that will really make you appreciate the freedoms we may sometimes take for granted here in America.

The Book of Joan: Tales of Mirth, Mischief, and Manipulation

Title: The Book of Joan: Tales of Mirth, Mischief, and Manipulation
Author: Melissa Rivers

Melissa Rivers, Joan's daughter, shares stories, anecdotes, thoughts and observations of her mother's life. I felt that the book did not do justice to her Mom's incredible life and career. Joan Rivers was a trailblazer for women both in the entertainment world and in the business world. A book that highlighted her many accomplishments, rather than resorting to one-liners, jokes and "bad" language would have been more fitting.

This is the third book in the Croak trilogy. The series revolves around the myth of the Grim Reaper and where people go when they die. This book takes up where the last leave off and finds the hero fighting to save the afterlife. There were many unexpected happenings -- the last chapter was a total "WHAT!! NO!!" and the author manages to tie everything up to a satisfactory conclusion.

All the Light We Cannot See

Title: All the Light We Cannot See
Author: Anthony Doerr

I enjoy the historic background and mostly enjoyed the descriptive French country cities from Paris to Saint-Malo. The women in this book are really strong individuals from Frau Elena, Jutta, and especially Marie-Laure. Fantastic story of survival during World War II and the parallels between Werner and Marie-Laure and Captain Nemo really had me amazed.

Her Last Whisper

Title: Her Last Whisper
Author: Karen Robards

This is the third book in a series with character Charlotte Stone. The books are a mix of the Ghost Whisperer and Criminal Minds TV series. Enjoyable but I felt that the first two books were better. The storyline is predictable. I would give the book a chance because it is suspenseful and I enjoy the characters. Must read the first two books first though! They are:
1. The Last Victim
2. The Last Kiss Goodbye
A fourth book is in the works.
